- Now is the time, my friends. This is the moment when you have to decide between the Republic or the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Count Dooku, in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones.
The Confederacy of Independent Systems, on screen more commonly referred as the Separatists, was a fictional faction featured in the prequel films of the Star Wars saga: Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
The Confederacy of Independent Systems was a composite of planetary governments and corporations, which had been gathered by Count Dooku (Christopher Lee), in response to both the inaction of the corrupted Galactic Senate of the Old Republic and its excessive taxation. The separatists were rejected by the politicians of the Old Republic, and by their subordinate Jedi Knights, the mythical defenders of freedom.
Nonetheless, in essence the Confederacy of Independent Systems was just another puppet of the sinister Senator Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid), and his dark plans.
The conflict escalated as the Separatists kept building a massive droid army, and the Old Republic hired the massive Clone Army in response. The three-year Clone Wars ensued, yet the Separatists eventually lost it, allowing that the evil Galactic Empire was enthroned, led by Emperor Palpatine (whose alter ego was the malignant sith Darth Sidious, actually).
